How creative are you? Not at all creative? Or, do you thrive on being creative?
If you are like most of the nutrition science students I taught at Purdue, you don’t consider yourself very creative. That is a shame. We are all creative beings and expressing our creativity is important to our effectiveness as a communicator.
Would you like to feel more creative? You can. And it won’t require any coursework or classes, just a reminder that we are all creative if we allow ourselves to be. That reminder can come through harnessing the power of inspiring quotes.
In this post, we will look at what creativity is, why we may not think of ourselves as creative, and identify quotes that can help us feel more creative.
What is creativity?
In the book, Human Motivation, by Robert E. Franken, creativity is defined as “the tendency to generate or recognize ideas, alternatives, or possibilities that may be useful in solving problems, communicating with others, and entertaining ourselves and others.”
Synonyms include imagination, vision, inventiveness, ingenuity, innovation, and originality.
Creativity helps us succeed in all areas of our lives. Tapping into our inherent creativity benefits us in many ways. In addition to more effective communication, creativity is associated with positive health – physical, mental, cognitive, and social – as well as emotional intelligence, adaptability, and overall well-being.
Why do we think we are not creative?
The reasons cited for people not feeling creative fall into the following categories:
Defining creativity narrowly as having artistic ability.
Thinking creativity is a rare trait.
Having self-defeating beliefs that one lacks personal creativity.
Comparing oneself to others in unrealistic ways.
Experiencing poor mental health such as depression, anxiety, or burnout.
To overcome these negative thoughts and feelings, let’s be inspired by what others have to say about creativity.
